THQ: "Hardware Cycle Not Applicable Anymore"

August 5th, 2008 Posted in Business, Hardware by Rajiv Ashrafi

brianfarrell THQ president and CEO Brian Ferell believes that the game industry’s traditional “hardware cycle” no longer applies in the current market.

“We used to always think of this industry as “the cycle,’” he said. “I think the reality now is there are several sub-cycles.”

Ferell then goes on to state that the industry has at least three separate sub-cycles – the handheld market, the competition between the PS3 and Xbox 360, and then the Wii. He further noted that yet another sub-cycle may be coming up in the online games market.

“It’s hard now to talk about ‘the cycle’—I think we have to talk about all of the cycles,” Ferrell added. “The way we think about it at THQ is we plan our business around each of those platforms, not around ‘the cycle.’”
