There have been countless digital reenactments of almost every important battle in the entire conflict yet it seems that gamers aren’t sick of them yet. Despite being jaded about the genre, I admit to being somewhat interested in Call of Duty: World of War.

Everyone else is too it seems because Treyarch announced that in the first weekend the second map pack was downloaded over a million times. The $9.99 content pack contains four maps, including Shi No Numa. Yes, that’s right, it’s another zombie level. That’s got a lot to do with the appeal of this game for many I’m guessing. If you’re unfamiliar with the mode, it’s an online co-op mode similar to the Gears of War horde mode where players face wave after wave of enemies, only this time they’re a combination of two popular video game enemies: Nazis and zombies.

Activision has announced that Call of Duty World At War has sold 11 million copies in the seven months it has been on the market, making it a faster selling game than the mighty Modern Warfare (which has sold 13 million worldwide to date).

Last week, the second map pack for the game was released, while the first map pack old almost 2 million copies on Xbox Live and PlayStation Network, the second DLC is expected to sell even more. World At War developer Treyarch is reportedly already working on a sequel, “Call of Duty 7″, which is set during the Cold War.

So by now you may have heard about Call of Duty: World at War, otherwise known as Call of Duty 5 for the PC, DS, Wii, Xbox 360, and Playstations two and three. It’s a game that manages to fuse together the mundane and the unique. The down side, of course, is that it mostly fuses the mundane to itself to make some horrible ironmongery of stuff you’ve already seen a couple hundred times before.

But before I get right down to business, it’s time for a plot rundown: we follow a series of different soldiers in all different parts of the Allied forces as they rampage their way across the Pacific Theatre, up into Russia, BACK to the Pacific, back once again to Russia before taking on Berlin, and accomplishing a series of missions, including calling down rockets on Japanese Ha-Go tank forces, handling a Russian T-34 tank and running the guns on a PBY Catalina flying boat. You will be effectively a part of the last and loudest hours of World War II.

And, in case you didn’t see this coming by the big number five on the title, yes, this is yet another in a long, long, LONG (and growing…) string of first person shooters. Sure, they’ve got some additions of new gameplay in here—when’s the last time you got to drive a tank in first person?—but let’s face it; there’s only so much variety you can get out of this particular chopped salad mix. There’s only so many ways you can make the same old baloney taste new and different.

However—if you’re willing to gut your way through a highly realistic, blood-spattered, downright gritty World War II simulation with more gunfire and explosions than even Saving Private Ryan could muster, presented in a format so eye-wateringly predictable that there’s almost no reason to play, then this time around, you’ll get a special bonus. It’s called Nazi Zombies mode, and, though they may not specifically be members of the Party, the mode itself comprises a series of maps, some of which are downloadable, in which you and possibly some friends attempt to hold a building against a legion of zombies bound and determined to break in.

The down side of that, of course, is like I said: you have to play your way through the ENTIRE CAMPAIGN to get access. I’m irritated by this. I’d personally like to see more first person shooters involving zombies (and ZOMBIES, not second-rate 28 Days Later knockoffs like Left 4 Dead, thank you very much), and the fact that these bastards made me slog through a hell of their own making just to get a crack at some zombie killing fun makes me furious to the point of derangement.

So let’s sum it up: Call of Duty World at War is not really a BAD game, it’s just more of the same. They offer some excellent graphics, and some fantastic realism, and even some unique features buried in all the warmed over leftover crap that is their primary campaign mode, but let’s face facts—aside from a pretty new paintjob and some fancy bells and whistles, this really is just more of the same. It’s up to you if you want to take another foray into the same crap you’ve been playing over and over for years, but if you love the first person shooter and just can’t get enough, then this is definitely the game for you.

To get more money in their coffers, the company has announced that the second downloadable map pack for Call of Duty: World at War will hit PS3 and Xbox 360 next month.

The pack, as with the first one, will offer four new maps – Banzai, Corrosion, Sub Pens and Shi No Zuma (Zombie Swamp) – with three for competitive multiplayer and the last one for the cooperative Nazi zombie mode.

It will also add ten new Achievements and Trophies. No pricing or specific release details were given, though it should be noted that the first pack sold for $10 on consoles and was later released for free on PC.

Here’s a bit on the maps:

Online, players will compete in "Banzai," and fight for control of a tall, river bridge, deep within enemy territory; face down foes in a shattered Russian train yard in "Corrosion"; and struggle to control a bombed-out submarine base in the close-quarter map, "Sub Pens." In "Shi No Numa" (Zombie Swamp), Imperial Zombies rise from misty swamps in an all new co-op experience, with a level that features a mix of traps, flaming Hell Hounds, Perk machines and the deadly, new Wunderwaffe DG-2, as well as 10 new Xbox 360 Achievements/PS3 Trophies that can be earned along the way.

If you’ve been paying attention, you know that Activision recently lowered the price on one of it’s biggest releases of the year, Call of Duty: World at War. Well, it looks like some analysts are speculating that the mega-publisher may have started a new trend; decrease the price on major releases.

Following Call of Duty’s price reduction, Guitar Hero: World Tour and Ubisoft’s Prince of Persia followed suit. Although, if you weren’t born yesterday, you know that past-gen titles were always priced at $50, it wasn’t until this generation of consoles that brought about the $60 price point.

While this is great news that could potentially save gamers $10 here-and-there, let’s just hope that maybe this will entice enough studios to drop the prices on all of their games effectively bringing back the $50 price point.

Now you can finally justify the extra dollars you spend on those Collector’s Edition versions of your games, as Activision today announced that those who bought the PC and Xbox 360 CE versions of Call of Duty: World at War will be able to earn double experience points from online multiplayer from December 5 through December 12.

PC gamers will need to have activated their copy, which is done automatically as the serial code is entered during installation; any server will offer double XP. On Xbox Live, you will need to play on the “Officer’s Club” playlist for double XP and must have registered on the official site and then downloaded the accompanying token.

Those who bought the regular-priced version will not be eligible to participate in the event.

Following the release of Call of Duty: World at War GameStop has announced that they will be holding a national tournament for the game inviting those with access to a store to participate.

How the tournament will work is players will compete in one-vs-one single elimination rounds until the best player at each store is found. Once that player is found he will be compete in the District semifinals, followed by the Regional finals. Once that is set and done, the player will be flown, along with 32 other Regional finalists, to San Diego for the finals aboard the USS Midway aircraft carrier.

Sounds pretty cool right? The grand prize will be $2,500 dollars, but we all know the real prize is being able to say you are the best Call of Duty player in the country.

You can head to the tournaments official page to get more information about it at: http://www.gamestop.com/codworldatwar.
