Have you spent money on Call of Duty: World at War DLC? According to recent reports, chances are you have — It seems that the average World at War owner has spent $9 on DLC.

Gamasutra reached this conclusion by saying the 3 DLC maps for WaW currently on the market have sold nearly 7 million copies netting Activision close to $45 million in revenue. Do the math and that apparently comes out to U.S. WaW owners spending on average $9 on DLC.

So folks, need more proof that both World at War and Modern Warfare 2 are sure to see a very DLC packed future?

Treyarch only released the second map pack for Call of Duty: World at War last month and already they are gearing up to launch the game’s third installment.

Appropriately entitled Map Pack 3, this pack will include three multiplayer maps and an additional Nazi Zombie map. Pictured above is Revolution, one map to be included in said pack, with pictures of the other two maps, Breach and Battery, included after the break. Unfortunately, Treyarch released no screen shots of the new Nazi Zombie map, Der Riese.

With the success of World at War’s previous 2 map packs it’s no wonder that Treyarch would continue to release similar content. I mean, the game is published by Activision, remember?

However, Activision ripped the prefix out of the game’s official title, and referred to the game as simply Modern Warfare 2. Today, we find out that Activision has decided to slap the prefix back on to the title for the golden release.

“We have focused our attention on Modern Warfare in order to most effectively communicate the fact that this is the first true sequel in the Call of Duty series. Infinity Ward, the original creators of the Call of Duty franchise, has said from the beginning Modern Warfare 2 resides in the Call of Duty universe. This is reflected in the title’s package.”

Along with this statement, Infinity Ward’s director of communications and community manager Robert Bowling revealed in a Twitter update that he had received the first two official boxes of the game “straight from the press” and included a photo of them.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 will be hitting Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3, and the Xbox 360 on November 10th.

Back when the game was released there was some confusion over whether or not Modern Warfare 2 would be called Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 or just Modern Warfare 2. Well, Infinity Ward and Activision released a statement that would officially deem the title just Modern Warfare 2. However, is the fact that the game is no longer called Call of Duty going to hurt its success?

Yes, and no, according to tracking firm OTX who says that the brand awareness of the game has been halved due to Call of Duty being removed from the title. However, the firm then went on to say that they are still expecting the game to make a killing:

Even without the Call of Duty association, it is still perceived as a much have title” – OTX spokesperson

I don’t know about you guys but I’m definitely going to be purchasing Modern Warfare 2 along with pretty much every other Xbox 360 owner I know. The fact that it dropped the Call of Duty moniker is less of a bummer than the assumed fact a Nazi Zombie equivalent won’t be present.

Infinity Ward has put a kaibosh on those rumors, at least when it comes to Modern Warfare 2.

A post on their official forum said ”multiplayer will always be equal and free for everyone as always.”. The survey had come supposedly from Activision and highlighted the benefits of subscription plans. Infinity ward made sure people knew that this was only coming from Activision and had nothing to do with their games. I’m guessing that Infinity Ward knows many of us are only occasional gamers who wouldn’t be terribly happy with paying to play a game they only occasionally have time to sit down at.

There certainly is some room for additional revenue generation when it comes to gaming, but the existing avenue of downloadable map packs and character models is likely the better approach, since the gamers who play more often are generally younger and have less disposable income while the older ones have the cash to put into it but not the time to make a subscription plan worthwhile.

It seems that Activision just can’t stop raping the Call of Duty franchise. If it wasn’t enough that there are countless Call of Duty games out there, Activision CEO Bobby Kotick recently said at a analyst meeting;

“[What] would be the natural evolution of a property like Call of Duty into a massively multiplayer environment — how do you monetize that?”

Activision then went and created a detailed survey for Call of Duty players, according to Destructoid, asking users various questions regarding a possible “enhanced service”, where players would pay a monthly fee for content such as “map packs” and “team management services”. You know, things that are usually free in all other games.

Janco Partners analyst Mike Hickey expect Infinity Ward’s shooter Modern Warfare 2 to sell a massive 11.1 million copies during its fist two months (!), that’s right 11.1 million.

A few months ago, Activision announced that the original Modern Warfare sold over 12 million copies in 17 months on the market. The analyst thinks the the sequel can beat that in a mere 2 months, because of Activision’s ramped up pre-order and marketing campaigns, plus the fact that Xbox 360 and PS3 install bases have doubled since the release of the original game.

No doubt Modern Warfare 2 will be a popular game, but we still find it highly optimistic for it to sell over 11 million copies in 2 months. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is slated for release on November 10 on PC, Xbox 360 and PS3.

So by now you may have heard about Call of Duty: World at War, otherwise known as Call of Duty 5 for the PC, DS, Wii, Xbox 360, and Playstations two and three. It’s a game that manages to fuse together the mundane and the unique. The down side, of course, is that it mostly fuses the mundane to itself to make some horrible ironmongery of stuff you’ve already seen a couple hundred times before.

But before I get right down to business, it’s time for a plot rundown: we follow a series of different soldiers in all different parts of the Allied forces as they rampage their way across the Pacific Theatre, up into Russia, BACK to the Pacific, back once again to Russia before taking on Berlin, and accomplishing a series of missions, including calling down rockets on Japanese Ha-Go tank forces, handling a Russian T-34 tank and running the guns on a PBY Catalina flying boat. You will be effectively a part of the last and loudest hours of World War II.

And, in case you didn’t see this coming by the big number five on the title, yes, this is yet another in a long, long, LONG (and growing…) string of first person shooters. Sure, they’ve got some additions of new gameplay in here—when’s the last time you got to drive a tank in first person?—but let’s face it; there’s only so much variety you can get out of this particular chopped salad mix. There’s only so many ways you can make the same old baloney taste new and different.

However—if you’re willing to gut your way through a highly realistic, blood-spattered, downright gritty World War II simulation with more gunfire and explosions than even Saving Private Ryan could muster, presented in a format so eye-wateringly predictable that there’s almost no reason to play, then this time around, you’ll get a special bonus. It’s called Nazi Zombies mode, and, though they may not specifically be members of the Party, the mode itself comprises a series of maps, some of which are downloadable, in which you and possibly some friends attempt to hold a building against a legion of zombies bound and determined to break in.

The down side of that, of course, is like I said: you have to play your way through the ENTIRE CAMPAIGN to get access. I’m irritated by this. I’d personally like to see more first person shooters involving zombies (and ZOMBIES, not second-rate 28 Days Later knockoffs like Left 4 Dead, thank you very much), and the fact that these bastards made me slog through a hell of their own making just to get a crack at some zombie killing fun makes me furious to the point of derangement.

So let’s sum it up: Call of Duty World at War is not really a BAD game, it’s just more of the same. They offer some excellent graphics, and some fantastic realism, and even some unique features buried in all the warmed over leftover crap that is their primary campaign mode, but let’s face facts—aside from a pretty new paintjob and some fancy bells and whistles, this really is just more of the same. It’s up to you if you want to take another foray into the same crap you’ve been playing over and over for years, but if you love the first person shooter and just can’t get enough, then this is definitely the game for you.

Sure it’s a good game and all but everyone who’s anyone loves the Nazi zombie feature that Treyarch introduced to the Call of Duty series. And, considering the forthcoming Map Pack 2 is going to include a new Nazi zombie map, it’s probably safe to say it will sell as good if not better than Map Pack 1.

The site also notes that Treyarch will be the developer for this supposed seventh installment in the Call of Duty series.

Noah Heller is said to be involved in the project; it should be noted that he was the senior producer on World at War, which basically confirms the participation of Treyarch. It isn’t exactly known why they are pursuing music from those eras. Vietnam War I get, but Cuban and African music? I’m guessing secret ops or covert operations.

The next game – Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 – is due out this fall on the usual platforms.

Featuring in the video is a general low down of the map along with an important feature; perks in the form of cola’s. You’ll be able to drink cola found in various machines that give you powerups like the ability to shoot faster and the ability to quickly revive a downed teammate.

Sounds cool, but how will it stack up against the much loved original zombie map?
