The Witcher Console Port Suspended
Following up on word yesterday, CD Projekt has yet to offer its promised statement on the console version of The Witcher, but the company did confirm that the game’s development has been suspended due to financial issues.
"The Witcher: Rise of the White Wolf has been suspended pending the resolution of financial issues between the different project partners," said Widescreen director Olivier Masclef. This is the studio who was co-developing the game with CD Projekt.
Apparently CD Projekt missed “a big payment that we were supposed to receive.” Masclef adds that they have not been financially covered for three months.
"I will try to find any solution for the fans. The Witcher on console is an extremely promising title that’s awaited by a lot of people," he added. "We have it running here, and I can tell you that if it hits the shelves one day it’s going to be great."
Meanwhile, CD Projekt claims that “all payments were done on time according to milestone plan,” adding that Widescreen caused delays leading to late payments.
CD Projekt to Address The Witcher Console Cancellation ‘Soon’
There were recent rumors that the console port of 2007 action-RPG The Witcher had been cancelled. That might or might not turn out to be true, as a representative of CD Projekt told Shacknews that an official statement on the matter will be made ’soon’.
According to the site, the rumor originated from Polish site PolyGamia. Shacknews contacted the studio themselves and received a ‘no comment’ which gives more strength to the rumor.
The Witcher: Rise of the White Wolf was announced late last year and was scheduled for release on PS3 and Xbox 360 this fall.
The Witcher Among Top 100 Best-selling PC Games of All Time
Developer CD Projekt claims that its action-RPG game The Witcher – having sold over 1.2 million copies since its October 2007 release – is now among the 100 best-selling PC games of all time.
"Because of those numbers, The Witcher has jumped onto the list of the 100 bestselling PC games in history," CD Projekt RED marketing coordinator Karol Zajaczkowski wrote.
The 1.2 million figure includes both retail and digital distribution sales.
The morally ambiguous RPG is based off the works of Andrzej Sapkowski. Since its release in 2007, the game saw an enhanced re-release offering better animation and more content, among other things. A rebuilt console version is due out this fall on PS3 and Xbox 360.
The Witcher Sells a Million on ‘Dead’ Platform
CD Projekt has announced that their debut project The Witcher has sold over one million copies since its release twelve months ago. The studio notes that this number represents sales to “real, live people” playing on a platform some have declared “dead”.
"We created The Witcher with the intent of becoming an acclaimed and successful development studio that always made games for its fans; we spent more than $11 million developing The Witcher and the Enhanced Edition, and it sure is nice to make some of that money back!" said CEO Adam Kicinski.
The Enhanced Edition was released last month, offering graphical improvements, additional NPC models, improved load times and many other improvements.
CD Projekt also recently launched Good Old Games, a digital distribution platform for retro titles.
Good Old Games Finally Launches
Aching for some retro goodness, but can’t find those old CDs? CD Projekt has finally launched the full version of its digital distribution platform Good Old Games for the public today, bringing cheap DRM-free downloads of classic PC games.
There are currently over 40 titles, priced at either $5.99 or $9.99. All the games have been reworked to work on modern operating systems – Windows Vista and XP – and can be downloaded as many times as you like.
Many more titles are set to hit the store soon. Hit the jump for the full list.
Publishers Scared of Going DRM-free
The gaming industry sure loves its DRM, unlike that of the recent trend in the music industry. CD Projekt’s Good Old Games digital distribution service, which is set to sell retro games without any form of DRM, is having a tough time convincing publishers to join the platform.
"We’re trying to convince [publishers] there is nothing to be afraid of," said studio CEO Michael Kicinski. "DRM-free, that is something they are really scared of, but on the other hand we can say ‘all of those games are available pirated widely so it’s better to sell them for small money than make the customer’s life difficult and get some more revenues.’"
CD Projekt is known best for The Witcher, but is currently focusing on launching the GOG service which will offer cheap, Vista-friendly versions of old games such as FreeSpace and Fallout.
"DRM makes customer’s lives too complicated, and this is usually because of some corporate ideas, policies and trying to be smart, too smart, in how to get customers and how to keep them and no let them go somewhere else. We are believers in the free market and bringing freedom to customers."
The Witcher: Versus Premium Content Plans
Developer CD Projekt revealed plans that they will soon add premium content to The Witcher: Versus, its browser-based game based on its action-RPG The Witcher.
Sales of premium content will support the continued development of the game, though the studio is quick to point out that future changes will not focus on premium content only, but will serve to make the free-to-play game even more enticing.
They note that the content will be added gradually, with the first premium access package containing new features intended to ease account and character management.
Additional details are expected over the next few months.
