If you currently play NCsoft’s Dragon Runners you better start looking for alternatives as it was recently made known that the online serviers for the free-to-play game will be shutting down on January 1st, 2010.

News comes to us from the game’s lead programmer, Stephen Nichols, who said the following:

Dungeon Runners just isn’t cutting the mustard. If she were a ship, she’d be taking on water… The game just isn’t profitable.

However, according to Eurogamer, NCsoft will be giving Dungeon Runners players ‘free game time and copies of City of Heroes and Guild Wars Prophercies‘.

Cryptic Studios announced in late April that their newest MMO Champions Online would be shipping on July 14th. However, Cryptic has made the concious decision to delay the game until September 1st, but why?

Well, executive producer for the game, Bill Roper, gave the following reason:

Through our constant dialogue with our vocal and supportive community of beta testers, we quickly realized that in order to implement certain features that we all considered important the development of Champions Online would require more time

And, according to Joystiq, these features will include things like “more instanced and scripted missions” along with “core powers, travel powers and upgrades”.

Well OK Mr. Roper, let’s just hope you and Cryptic Studios deliver a great game.

Champions Online Poaching Users from Rival MMO

champonline Cryptic Studios has confirmed that it recruited players for the Champions Online closed beta from rival City of Heroes and other PC MMOs.

Rumors of such practices came up through Massively earlier this week. In fact, the official City of Heroes website warned players and forum-users of solicitations from “another game company trying to lure you to their competing product.”

"I’m certain this wasn’t meant to be a malicious attack on a competing product, nor did anyone intend to steal players, violate user agreements, kill babies, or knife hardworking farmers in the back," reads a statement from Cryptic’s Ivan Sulic.

"A few of our employees thought it might be a good idea to contact avid MMO notables and various guild leaders floating about to see if they wanted to test," he added. "The folks who send [invites] figured people who play MMOs most might want them most. If a line was crossed, it was totally inadvertent and no harm was intended."

The PC version of Champions Online is due out sometime this spring. A Xbox 360 version is also in development, though no release timeframe was given.
