Rumor: E3 Going Public

Fueling the expo fire, Kotaku reports of a rumor that the E3 Media & Business Summit, following much criticism for its poor 2008 show, is looking to open itself to the public.

The board of directors of the Electronic Software Association has officially proposed and id discussing the possibility of opening the show to the public, which would go against the 2006 decision to scale down the show and open itself only to the press.

While the show has always been an invite-only affair, pre-2006 events had a more party atmosphere, with companies throwing parties and decorating large, expensive booths just to publicize their games. The post-2006 shows have gotten more networking-friendly, but have lost their luster to gamers.

The expo industry is on fire now what with the demise of the old E3 and the rise of conventions like Penny Arcade Expo and the Leipzig Games Convention. Throwing its weight in, European gaming site EuroGamer has decided to join the fray of consumer-oriented trade shows, announcing the EuroGamer Expo, playfully dubbed “E2″.

It will run alongside the London Games Festival on October 28 and 29. General public will be able to enter the expo for five hours for a five pound donation to UK video games charity GamesAid.

The lineup looks solid, with Mirror’s Edge, Street Fighter 4 and Fallout 3 primed to make appearances, among other titles.
