Far Cry 2 Sells a Million

November 11th, 2008 No Comments   Posted in Action, FPS, PC, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360

Far-Cry-2-1422 Despite being radically different from the original, Far Cry 2, relying on its brand power, has sold over a million units worldwide since it was released in the third week of October.

"[Far Cry 2] is well on track to achieve our expectations for the year," said Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot. "The holiday quarter is off to a solid start with the successful launch."

The ailing PC format, which many speculated would die soon, saw the game break into the retail sales chart, topping it, in fact, during the week of its release. No hard numbers were given though. Console numbers aren’t known either, but a similar level of sales performance is expected, too.

Far Cry 2 has SecuROM DRM

farcry2pc Keeping on the DRM path, the Far Cry 2 forums notes that the game will come with DRM, with a subsequent post by a Ubi forum manager confirming the use of SecuROM DRM indicated on the French Ubisoft shop.

The DRM will allow five activations on 3 separate computers. Interestingly, uninstalling the game “refunds” an activation so long as you complete proper uninstall. Ubisoft hopes to support the fans by allowing additional activations and assures that you’ll always be able to play the game, be it in the far future.

There’s both good news and bad news for those looking forward to Far Cry 2.

First, the good news: Ubisoft Montreal has detailed the various multiplayer modes that will be present in the game. They include Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Capture the Diamond and Uprising. CtD, as the name suggests, is the CTF format reworked into the game to work in its African setting. Uprising is a modified version of a VIP mode.

Now the bad news: there won’t be a playable demo for the game. Apparently, even if they do try to make a demo, it’d be too complex due to the nature of open-world games.

Far Cry 2 comes out on PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 on October 21 in North America.

Far Cry 3 in "Preliminary Stages", Will Share African Setting

With Far Cry 2 due for release soon, narrative designer Patrick Redding has revealed that a third game in the series is in the “preliminary stages” and will most likely share the sequel’s African setting.

“For us Africa still has a huge amount of promise,” said Redding. “Let’s face it, jungle islands are probably less exciting as they were four years ago.”

“There are still things we want to do with the African setting, and I think it’s safe to say we’ll continue to explore it,” he explained. “That said, we might find something new and compelling about the Antarctic setting that wants us to make the next game there, but honestly, we’re still at the preliminary stages.”

The original Far Cry was developed by Crytek and released back in 2004 on PC. It took place on a tropical island, which Crysis, the studio’s second project, also shared.

Far Cry 2 is set for release on PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 this Fall.
