Wii Internet Channel is now free to use

September 1st, 2009 No Comments   Posted in Nintendo, Online, Software, Wii

Back before my Wii began collecting dust due to its lack of a solid games library (yes, I know, Super Smash, Mario, etc. are great games), the Wii Internet Channel was just a Trial before gamers were required to pay 500 Wii Points for the software.

Well, Nintendo has announced today that those who paid said fee will be getting credit towards any NES game this October while the Internet Channel will be free to use for all.

What’s more, Nintendo has also let us know that they are updating the browser’s Flash from 7 to Flash Lite 3.1, making for a whole slew of new found usability.

If you’ve read, heard, or watched any form of media in the past couple of days you’ll know that Michael Jackson aka The King of Pop has passed away. To commemorate the artist’s greatness Microsoft decided to offer the music video for his hit single Thriller free over charge during the weekend.

Well, during the 2 days it was offerent MTV Multiplayer reports that the video was downloaded over 50,000 times. They then go on to point out that 50,000 is just 0.25% of Xbox Live’s 20 million subscriber base. Of course, Michael Jackson might be considered a bit old school to the majority of those 20 million.

Nonetheless, Michael Jackson’s legacy shall live on.

Whiskey Tango Foxtrot Game Review–Not What I Had In Mind

March 23rd, 2009 No Comments   Posted in Action, Casual, Free, Offbeat, Online, PC, Reviews, Shooter

I admit, that while on Kongregate, I found a game that turned out to be a whole lot different from what I expected.  When you walk in on a game that calls itself Whiskey Tango Foxtrot (WTF for those of you who don’t know radio lingo), you don’t exactly know what to expect out of it.  So when I got a mild Space Invaders clone, I was somewhat relieved if a bit disappointed.

In Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, the White House is under attack, and you’ll take command of what might be a tank and what might be a column to fire random blobs at threats that fall from the sky, everything from paratroopers to UFOs to bombs and all the way up to enormous cruise missiles.  You’ll go up in rank for every wave you survive (I personally got as high as major), and every enemy you miss adds to your threat level, which will end the game upon reaching a certain height.
Certain things could have improved the game vastly–different weapons, various other threats besides the standard four that I’ve already listed, even a way to lower the threat level as you proceed would’ve made for a deeper gameplay experience.  But no, we’re stuck with a fairly bare-bones shooter that doesn’t bring in a whole lot of fun.

It’s not exactly a bit of long term fun, but I don’t necessarily regret giving it a try.  I’d likely never go back so I really can’t recommend it, but if you do feel like giving it a try, you might not be terribly disappointed.

CnC Generals “Controversial” Mission Released

March 2nd, 2009 No Comments   Posted in Action, PC, Strategy

Command-Conquer-Generals-Zero-Hour-Mod-Invasion-Confirmed_2 Celebrating the six year anniversary of the release of Command & Conquer Generals, EA has released a “controversial” mission for the game.

Released for free, the mission was originally intended to be the third mission in the game’s Global Liberation Army campaign; it proved to be a bit too edgy to be included in the final release. Dubbed “Black Sheep”, the mission entails:

…Players were given command of the Toxin Tractor, a slow-going farm vehicle modified to spray a deadly corrosive agent, and ordered to eliminate a town that had been "corrupted beyond salvation" by the USA’s propaganda. While the mission was ultimately removed from Generals, the Toxin Tractor was available in other campaign missions, as well as in multiplayer and skirmish modes.

If you have the game, be sure to check this unethical (and also immoral) mission out.
