Borderlands is scheduled for an October 20th release in North America and on the 23rd in PAL regions. The game will be released for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC. 2K Games is calling the game a first in a franchise, so expect more installments of the game sometime in the future.

In response to questions on how the game will fair against blockbuster titles like Uncharted 2, 2K Games president Christoph Hartmann doesn’t “think we have to be afraid of competition or shy of what’s out there, I think this holiday season is a little bit lighter in triple-A games than last year. It’s actually a good holiday to put something out. … There’s always risk and opportunity. The risk is you have a hard time standing out against established IP. The opportunity is you have a lot of traffic here and it can be a much bigger product at retail than it would be otherwise.”

Borderlands will be released for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC. Word around town is that it will be the first title in its franchise, so expect a sequel in the future.

Going by a release schedule from Sega’s European branch, it appears Gearbox’s Aliens: Colonial Marines will be released within the next three months. The game was originally set for release late last year, but was delayed to sometime this year.

The game was rumored to be cancelled amidst layoffs at the company, but Gearbox head honcho Randy Pitchford quickly shot it down. Sega has remained unusually quiet on the highly anticipated squad-based shooter that goes back to the formula of classic AvP games.

Sega and Gearbox are yet to confirm the release date.

Gearbox is best known for its work on the original Brothers in Arms, which has a sequel on the way; it will soon release Samba de Amigo and its future lineup consists of Aliens: Colonial Marines and Borderlands.

Meanwhile, Halo creator Bungie has revealed that it is working on a new game in the shooter series, though no details have been released yet. Two more Halo titles are also in the works – Halo Wars and a project from Peter Jackson.
