In Nintendo’s Financial Results Briefing Q&A for the 69th fiscal term (ended in March), President and CEO of Nintendo Satoru Iwata answered several questions. One of the questions asked was if the DSi would be seeing a price cut anytime soon. In response to the question, Iwata said:

“…price cuts in one country can certainly affect other countries. For example, when you say that we should cut the price in Japan due to the current domestic market situation, once the suggested retail price is cut in Japan, people outside Japan will anticipate the same around the world.”

It would indeed hurt the early adopters’ loyalty to the company if there were such a price cut early into the product’s lifespan, but there are still more opportunities to get new customers as well. Iwata cares more about the well-being of the company on an international scale, and not on a country-by-country basis. In summary, Iwata concluded that he has no “specific ideas about the price cut at all.”

Despite losing a hefty sum on every PlayStation 3 console sold, Sony still has the most expensive console on the market, and as a result is feeling the pressure from publishers to lower the price of the console.

Mike Hickey, an analyst from Janco Partners says that unless Sony can cut the price of the PS3, publishers will relocate their resources to the Wii. Which is the reason Hickey believes that Sony will cut the price of the PS3 by $50 to $100 next month.

According to Bloomberg, Activision/Blizzard, the biggest publisher in the world, reported that 32 percent of their revenue in 2008 came from the Wii, while only 19 percent came from the PS3.

If you were to ask someone at Sony that same question, however, you’d get a different kind of answer. After being asked if Sony felt any pressure to drop the price of the PlayStation 3 Ray Maguire, the managing director for Sony Computer Entertainment, replied by stating that it really doesn’t matter whether there is pressure or not.

“Well the pressure comes from the consumers obviously and so therefore there’s always pressure on price, but you know we have a business to run, and we have to make sure we’re doing the right thing for the shareholders as well. At the moment there’s a marketplace for PS3 and I think for this particular Christmas, with the kind of quality of games we’re seeing coming out this Christmas, I don’t think the price of the console is going to be an issue at all.”

Now, Sony is certainly at a far, better position price-wise than during the first part of the PlayStation 3’s life. That said, a price drop will only help to sell consoles. For a company that doesn’t buy exclusivity, I find it ironic that they are relying on quality titles to sell their system.

Fueling rampant rumors, Joystiq has posted an image of a Radioshack flyer that details a $50-80 price cut on the various models of the console.

The Xbox 360 Arcade model will come down to $199 from $279, Pro (60GB) to $299 from $349 and Elite (120GB) to $399 from $449.

The site also notes that several contacts in the retail industry have indicated the reductions are a done deal. Guess we won’t have to wait too long to find out.
