It seems that LEGO is gearing up to launch a Prince of Persia themed series of their iconic bricks. This is apparantly a marketing deal that Disney signed with LEGO to promote the movie coming out next April.

Anyways, pictured above is a snapshot of the Prince of Persia LEGO series that was recently shown off during Comic Con and from the looks of it they are exactly what we’d expect; LEGO toys.

If this is your kind of thing expect to see the Prince of Persia LEGO sets hit shelves right around the franchise’s big screen debut.

It was recently announced that Disney and LEGO have inked a deal that will allow a Prince of Persia LEGO series to be produced.

But what does this mean for us gamers, considering the toys are based on the movie and not the actual game?

Well, if there are toys based on Prince of Persia, this could mean that there is potentially a LEGO Prince of Persia video game in the works.

Press release after the break.

NEW YORK, Feb. 15 — American International Toy Fair — The LEGO Group and Disney Consumer Products today announced a multi-year licensing agreement that gives the world’s premiere construction toy brand access to an extensive portfolio of renowned Disney and Disney Pixar properties. LEGO® and LEGO DUPLO® products are currently in development for three franchises — Disney Pixar’s Toy Story and Cars, and Prince of Persia — all scheduled to launch in 2010.

Toy Story

Children’s imaginations will go “To infinity and beyond” when, beginning in 2010, they will be able to re-create the adventures of Buzz Lightyear and Woody with LEGO toys inspired by the Toy Story franchise. Toy Story-themed construction sets will be available on both LEGO DUPLO and LEGO System platforms, building the adventure and fun for children ages 2-12. LEGO System products based on Toy Story and Toy Story 2 will launch in January 2010, to be followed in May by construction sets based on the new animated feature, Toy Story 3, scheduled to hit theaters in Disney Digital 3D June 2010. Toy Story-themed LEGO DUPLO products launch in June 2010.

Cars

Lightning McQueen will rev his engine at the starting line of a DUPLO portfolio that will have young builders creating and exploring the high-octane world of the Cars franchise. The Cars-themed LEGO DUPLO line will feature iconic scenes from Radiator Springs and the Piston Cup Championship raceway and will feature favorite Cars characters like McQueen, Mater and Sally. Cars-themed LEGO DUPLO products are scheduled to launch in June 2010.

Prince of Persia

A line of LEGO System construction toys based on Walt Disney Pictures’ and Jerry Bruckheimer Films’ Prince of Persia: Sands of Time, produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, directed by Mike Newell and scheduled to release in May 2010 is also in development. The film, based on the best-selling video game franchise of the same name, stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Ben Kingsley, Alfred Molina and Gemma Arterton in an epic tale of Prince Dastan’s struggle to stop an evil ruler from unleashing a sandstorm that could destroy the world. Prince of Persia-themed LEGO products are scheduled to launch in April 2010.

“We are thrilled to team up with Disney, another of the world’s premium brands for families with children,” said Jorgen Vig Knudstorp, CEO LEGO Group. “When two brands who share similar values bring their franchises together — in this case a timeless play pattern with some of the industry’s most beloved stories and characters — and combine their access to families, retail strength and marketing power, amazing things can happen. We can’t wait to launch the first three lines and look forward to exploring all of the ways in which we bring the wonderful world of Disney to life in LEGO form.”

“Joining forces with LEGO Group speaks to the commitment and vision both companies share for quality product and innovative creativity that invigorates kids play,” said Vince Klaseus, senior vice president, global toys, Disney Consumer Products. “Our collaboration will continue to extend the vitality of our roster of franchises by bringing our characters and their worlds to life in a fresh and exciting way. Through these new LEGO product lines, Disney will continue to build presence in the construction toys category and grow market share in the boys demographic.”

The LEGO Group is a privately held, family-owned company, based in Billund, Denmark. It was founded in 1932 and today the group is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of play materials for children. The company is committed to the development of children’s creative and imaginative abilities through its products, which can be purchased in more than 130 countries. Visit www.LEGO.com

Disney Consumer Products and affiliates (DCP) is the business segment of The Walt Disney Company (NYSE: DIS – News) that extends the Disney brand to merchandise ranging from apparel, toys, home decor and books and magazines to foods and beverages, stationery, electronics and fine art. Assure her it has nothing to do with the film’s star and keep your eyes open, because halfway through the film you’ll be able to catch a glimpse of a poster for one of Jerry Bruckheimer’s upcoming films.

It’s a previously unseen shot of Jake Gyllenhal in full costume as the Prince of Persia in the upcoming 2010 film. It’ll be in the well-known Times Square region of NYC, likely as one of the ubiquitous billboards. It’s a somewhat odd choice to put this kind of teaser ad in a film that will likely have whatever segment of the gaming population is watching it asleep in their popcorn. Also odd is the idea that someone really concerned with shopping would be spending time in the tourist trap that is times square with the dozens of boutiques downtown and Fifth Avenue nearby.

If you’ve been paying attention, you know that Activision recently lowered the price on one of it’s biggest releases of the year, Call of Duty: World at War. Well, it looks like some analysts are speculating that the mega-publisher may have started a new trend; decrease the price on major releases.

Following Call of Duty’s price reduction, Guitar Hero: World Tour and Ubisoft’s Prince of Persia followed suit. Although, if you weren’t born yesterday, you know that past-gen titles were always priced at $50, it wasn’t until this generation of consoles that brought about the $60 price point.

While this is great news that could potentially save gamers $10 here-and-there, let’s just hope that maybe this will entice enough studios to drop the prices on all of their games effectively bringing back the $50 price point.

Is your Santa a smart shopper or has he already gotten that Prince of Persia game? We’re hoping that he actually failed to get it yet as the game is now available for a whooping discounted price. It’s not $59.99 as it was at its launch two weeks ago. It only costs $39.99 in various GameStop locations. Better make sure your Santa knows about it.

Going the opposite way of most other publishers, Ubisoft has revealed that the retail PC version of Prince of Persia, which is to be released to stores this week, is entirely devoid of any form of DRM or copy-protection. This was disclosed by Ubisoft community manager Chris Easton.

“A lot of people complain that DRM is what forces people to pirate games but as PoP PC has no DRM we’ll see how truthful people actually are,” wrote Easton. “Not very, I imagine.”

Easton noted that only the physical retail copies of the game will be devoid of DRM.

Ubisoft is notorious for including draconian DRM in its games, including Assassins Creedfor which it was highly criticized because it had a DRM that apparently phoned home.

“We certainly have plans for downloadable content, [but] we can’t really say more than that right now,” he said. “The intention is to do downloadable content that adds significant value, so I don’t think you’ll see downloadable content of a new skin or a new weapon or something like that.”

He goes on to note that it is “going to be a new story, a new experience, maybe a prequel, maybe a sequel.” While no release date was promised, he stated that it simply won’t be out this year.

The game itself will be made available on PS3 and Xbox 360 on December 5; a PC version will hit on the following week.

This comes from Amazon’s online listings for the PC version, marking it for release on December 9, one week after the PS3 and Xbox 360 editions. This actually coincides with Eurogamer’s official confirmation of a one-week delay for the PC version in European territories.

As is usual these days, no reason was given for the delay. Almost all multiplatform releases these days are seeing PC versions delayed. This includes Dead Space and Mirror’s Edge, with the latter delayed to January.
