More UFC games announced, coming to Wii and handhelds

July 28th, 2009 2 Comments   Posted in Fighting, Nintendo DS, PSP, Portable, Sports, Wii

The recent record June quarter results announced today by THQ have lead the publishers to expand their UFC franchise to other consoles. The financial success of last month was primarily driven by UFC: Undisputed, so it’s no question that it would be in the best interest to release the game for the Wii and handheld systems, which have been dominating the market lately.

No word on a date for the Wii version, or specifics on which handheld platforms will be developed for.

Along with the port, THQ also announced that the series will become an annual franchise, meaning a new game for the series will be released every year, with new gameplay features and modes. Hopefully the game will not turn into another Madden.

Saints Row title coming to PSP?

July 17th, 2009 1 Comment   Posted in PSP, Portable

While it hasn’t been talked about much (or at all) it seems that a Swedish metal band by the name of Opeth has given us word that they have been selected to feature a song in an upcoming PSP version of Saints Row.

Below is an excerpt of their post:

We may not like playing video games all that much but we do like it when our music is featured on them! Makes us a bit proud even when it’s a game as big as Saints Row for the PSP and even prouder when the nice developer people show excellent taste by picking “The Lotus Eater” for it. So if you love playing video games: the game is expected to hit the streets around March 2010.

As with any rumor, take this with a grain of salt, but Opeth did seem positive one of their songs would be featured in said game, add that to the fact that THQ hasn’t said anything at all thus far.

We’ll update you with more information as it becomes known.

Red Faction Guerilla Gets Smashingly Good Promotion

June 11th, 2009 1 Comment   Posted in Action, Business, Culture, News, PC, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360

Whatever the review scores say (I haven’t played the game or read any reviews yet), I have to give THQ some major points for their interesting choice in promotions/publicity stunts/giveaways for Red Faction Guerilla. If you’d been strolling the streets of London yesterday you might have seen a car being pounded on by strangers with a sledgehammer.

This wasn’t a case of revenge, random violence or vandalism; THQ had taken a rather odd event most often used for a fundraiser at state fairs and utilized it to promote their newest game. Usually whoever’s running the ‘car smash’ charges a few bucks for a few whacks at the vehicle, but this time taking out your aggression on the automobile was more than free; it was profitable. Inside the car were over a hundred copies of Red Faction Guerilla. Folks at THQ said it was an ‘experiment’ to see how many people would stop in the middle of their day to wail on a car in order to get a free copy of the game, inspired by the game’s incredibly realistic destruction engine. They also get kudos for taking the car in for recycling after the conclusion of the event.

Warhammer 40,000 Space Marine Announced

June 4th, 2009 1 Comment   Posted in Action, E3, News, PlayStation 3, RPG, Xbox 360

Warhammer and Warhammer 40,000 are two of the most popular tabletop games in existence. Both involve large scale battles between armies at the beck and call of the armchair generals. Several video games have been based on these two series, but they have mostly been RTS games, simply a digitized version of the game. There is still so much potential left untapped however within the framework of these universes for many kinds of games.

That’s why THQ and Relic Entertainment are unveiling Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine. Amongst the various forces and factions of the futuristic universe are the human forces of the Ultramarines, foremost amongst their ranks are the Space Marines, the blue armor clad elite of their army. The action RPG game will have players controlling individual units in a ‘narrative-driven story campaign’ and of course in large scale online battles. Relic Entertainment is bringing years of experience developing games under the Warhammer licenses to the table along with THQ’s own history of success. The title is being developed for both the Xbox 360 and the PS3

THQ also recently released Red Faction: Guerilla, although it’s far too early to announce

THQ gives Queen Elizabeth a gold plated Wii

May 21st, 2009 No Comments   Posted in Console, Culture, Nintendo, Wii

Royalty gets to have all the fun — THQ recently announced that they have presented the Queen of England with the gold plated Nintendo Wii console pictured above.

Better yet, THQ is throwing in a copy of BIG Family Games title so the entire Royal Family can get in on the fun.

No disrespect to the Queen but she’s old and old people absolutely adore the Wii, I’ve seen it with my own two eyes. Plate that same console with gold and you have a gift set for a King, or actually a Queen, in this case.

THQ loses $431 million in 2008

May 6th, 2009 No Comments   Posted in Analyst, Business, News

THQ released their annual earnings report, and like with EA, it doesn’t look good. THQ’s revenue declined 22 percent to $800 million, while overall, the company saw losses of $431 million in fiscal 2008, compared to a loss of “just” $35 million in 2007.

Common with earnings reports, sales numbers for games were released as well. The number showed that THQ’s two best franchises were doing fairly well; Dawn of War franchise has sold over 4.5 million units, while the Saints Row franchise has sold over 5 million units.
