Black Wii hitting UK on Nov. 6

Gamers in the UK unhappy with the current white chassis of the Nintendo Wii will be happy to hear that a limited edition black version will be hitting store shelves on November 6th. As for the rest of Europe, you’ll be getting it on November 20th.

This limited edition comes with a black Wiimote, Nunchuk and Motion Plus. If you want the fancy black Classic Controller Pro, you’re going to have to buy that separately.

UK getting New Super Mario Bros. Wii Limited Tin Edition

It was recently made known that certain UK retailers will offer a Limited Tin Edition of New Super Mario Bros. Wii when it hit store shelves. One such retailer is GAME who has already begun taking pre-orders for the Limited Tin Edition.

There aren’t many exciting features about this limited edition other than the fact that the case is tin which means you could use it as a piggy bank.

This Limited Tin Edition New Super Mario Bros. Wii will drop on November 20th in the UK for 49.99 alongside the regular version for 34.99.

UK DJ Hero price revealed, isn’t cheap

If you thought $119.99 for the US DJ Hero was a lot of money and are located in the UK, cover your ears eyes. Activision has apparantly told UK retailers, ShopTo in particular, that the MSRP of DJ Hero is £107.99 or about $178.

Of course you’re not just getting the game disc but also the turntable controller which ThatVideoGameBlog reports has no gold in it, unfortunately.

Nintendo to offer Professor Layton DS Lite bundle in UK

Yes you read that right, despite the DSi’s availability Nintendo has announced that they will be offering a Professor Layton DS Lite bundle in the UK on June 19th.

The bundle will include a black Nintendo DS Lite along with a copy of Professor Layton and the Curious Village. There is really no telling why Nintendo decided to throw a DS Lite into this bundle instead of the newer DSi but who cares, at least the box looks cool.

On a different note, Nintendo is gearing up to drop this game’s sequel, Professor Layton and Pandora’s Box sometime this September.

New DS game to help you pass the driving test

Educational games on the Nintendo DS are nothing new, which is no surprise that the British are now getting a game that’ll help them practice on their written driving test. According to the publisher of the game, 40% of those who take the written test in the UK fail, which is where the game comes in.

It features all of the official 1256 driving test questions, and offers a free driving lesson to everyone who picks up a copy of the game, titled: Pass Your Driving Theory Test, and retails for 20 GBP.

Nintendo raising the price of the Wii in UK

Due to the depreciation of the British Pound, Nintendo will be raising the price of the Wii in the region. A company spokesman said;

“Due to the severe and continuing depreciation of the pound, we are, unfortunately, having to raise our trade price to UK retailers of Wii hardware. The price that they then offer to consumers is, of course, up to the retailers.”

The Wii currently retails at 180 GBP in the UK, a price point which will likely increase to 200 GBP. The Pound has lost around 20% of its value in 2008 alone.

Nintendo Says Mobile Gaming No Threat

Many of us can remember our first cellphones; not quite the gigantic monstrosities that are parodied in anything related to the early 90s but still sizeable pieces of technology with monochrome screens and large pixels. My first cellphone had an Othello game that I played many times, but since that time they’ve come a long ways. With more and more complex phones like the iPhone some are expecting the mobile phone gaming market to blow up, and others are expecting it’ll drive existing handhelds out of demand.

Most of the people making these predictions though either have a vested interest in saying so (like working for Apple) or aren’t involved in the industry (business analysts). Nintendo has insisted that they’re not concerned about the mobile gaming industry, saying that they in no way designed the DSi as a competitor for the iPhone or other cellphone gaming devices.

David Yarnton, general manager of Nintendo UK said that in designing the system the company left out many features they could have included, planning on keeping with their approach of letting the software sell systems. “We could have added lots of things, but then you become a jack of all trades, and a master of none. One of the things we are really honest about is that we stay faithful to our roots, of being a games company. The most important criterion is to make sure that what we’re offering can do the best games.”

He’s also warning people already that systems will be in short supply come this holiday season.

Console base now 22 million in UK, Ireland

New data from Chart Track is reporting some numbers for the total console base in the United Kingdom and Ireland.

The Xbox 360, PS3, and Wii have a combined console base of 10 million. Adding the 12 million portable systems into the mix, the total comes out to 22 million. Here’s the low down:

Xbox 360 – 3.2 million
Playstation 3 – 1.9 million
Wii – 4.9 million
DS – 8.8 million
PSP – 3.2 million

Drug-dealing GTA Incites Fury from UK Drug Support Group

Building up the hype train for the upcoming portable version of GTA that will let you sell drugs, British tabloid The Sun published an article Thursday titled “Fury Over Drug Deal Vid Game”.

The article had Darren Gold speaking on behalf of UK support group Drugsline, calling out the game for its “glamorization” of drug-dealing and “substance misuse”.

Ah, but it’s all a video game, right? Right? No one’s listening, and they obviously don’t care.

Rockstar will undoubtedly benefit from the free publicity GTA: Chinatown Wars will get from groups such as this. The game is due out later this year or early next year.

European Rock Band Price Decreased

With games like Rock Band 2 and Guitar Hero 4 on the horizon, it only makes sense that Rock Band would get a price cut right? Well, in Europe at least.

It was recently announced that the UK version of the Rockband instrument bundle will be getting it’s price decreased from £130/€170 to £110/€140. Then again, those numbers convert to $240 and $197.

Looks like us Americans have the upperhand afterall!

New Lara Croft Pictured

It’s time for another Lara Croft, what with a new Tomb Raider game due out this November. The new model for the timeless heroine is a former gymnast called Alison Carroll, 23, from Croydon, UK, who follows in the footsteps of models like Nell McAndrew in the role of Lara Croft.

On Daily Mail Online are a couple of pictures of the professional display gymnast who represents Britain at a national level and has even performed in front of Prince Charles; she is also a coach for younger gymnasts. Carroll has left her day job as a secretary to enter a training regime that includes lopping off the head of people standing next to her with a well-placed kick.

Tomb Raider: Underworld, the next game in the series, is due out November 21 on a variety of platforms.
