Unreal Tournament 3 free weekend in Steam

Another weekend, another game to be played for free on Steam. Last time it was Team Fortress 2, next weekend it’ll be Unreal Tournament 3. Last time the game received a free weekend player count jumped almost twenty fold, in addition to the game becoming a best seller on Steam.
This is not the regular version of UT3, but Unreal Tournament 3 Black, which is regular UT3 including the new (and free) Titan Pack.
Unreal Tournament 3 Game Review–Fun In First Person
I have to admit that when I played Unreal Tournament 3, I was expecting the worst. I was expecting yet another half-baked, warmed-over pile of leftover sludge in the form of a first person shooter, which are rapidly glutting the market in job lots. But actually playing Unreal Tournament 3, now available for the Xbox 360, Playstation 3 and PC, became something interesting–it became FUN.
In Unreal Tournament 3, you play as the Ronin, formerly the defenders of the Twin Souls mining colony until said colony was wiped out by an attack from the Necris. The Necris, just for background, are a subspecies of humanity that genetically modified themselves thanks to the Phayder Corporation as Black Ops forces par excellence. Anyway, the Necris launched an attack on Twin Souls for reasons that I’m not a hundred percent sure of, and left the Ronin without a home. They took up residence with the Izanagi Corporation on their home planet, and became a mercenary unit. Now, they need to curry favor with Izanagi to get the necessary resources and equipment to go hunt up the Necris and get some terminal payback on the homewreckers.
There are actually several OTHER races in the Unreal Tournament universe that will make an appearance in the multiplayer classifications and as ancillary parts of the story, including the Axon and Malcolm and the Thunder Crash team (or Thunder CASH, as Malcolm likes to call them), so you can’t fault this game for a lack of storyline. It’s got storyline almost in excess, really. But the gameplay is the important issue here–and surprisingly, the gameplay is actually pretty entertaining.
You’ll engage in a series of different kinds of fights, including straight battles, a duel system, and even a variant of capture the flag in which FlAG is actually an acronym for FieLd Ambient Generator, if I remember it correctly. That may be the most innovative use for an old retread that I’ve ever seen. It’s like someone took apart a water heater and made a woodburner stove out of it–this kind of recycling never fails to impress me, because even though it’s nothing new, it’s a completely new use for something old.
The controls are smooth, the arenas are sufficiently open that even I don’t get motion sickness very often, and with selectable difficulty levels you can customize the gameplay to feel like an invincible genius or like a hard-bitten warrior. Multiplayer is also well-present, and if you want a good party game, you could do a whole lot worse. Despite the fact that you’ll be essentially playing the same games over and over again–deathmatch, team deathmatch, VEHICLE deathmatic, capture the flag, et al, it’s still surprisingly fun, and it’s actually worth playing the single player version to get properly accustomed to the various maps for multiplayer fun.
There’s a lot to like about Unreal Tournament 3, and in all honesty, I don’t have this much fun with first person shooters often. For once, I can actually recommend a first person shooter, and that feels both strange and good at the same time. Hot action, a dash of adventure, and lots of shooter glee combine to make a title that even I can enjoy.
UT3 Titan Pack on PSN Today
According to the official PlayStation Blog, the Unreal Tournament 3 Titan Pack will be released on the PlayStation Network today.
The free DLC will add new maps, game modes, vehicles and characters, as well as the mutator mentioned in the title.
The new game types are Greed, a “tug of war” team mode game, and Betrayal, a cutthroat style where alliances and teams can shift through a match. The Titan mutator, meanwhile, lets players become a 30 foot tall behemoth in any game mode.
The DLC was released for the PC version earlier this month, leading to a whopping 2000% increase in players.
UT3 play increases by 2000% after free weekend. Another free weekend coming.

Since Unreal Tournament 3 was freely playable to everyone last weekend, the play time online increased a massive 2000%. Valve announced that the free weekend spiked the amount of purchases of the game as well, so it’s no surprise that another free weekend of UT3 is coming. The game will be freely played on March 13-15. The title has now a new promotional price as well: only $11.99, which will run until March 22. Thereafter it’s the usual $19.99.
Unreal Tournament 3 has been highly anticipated, but has greatly disappointed in sales compared to previous UT titles. The new price offerings and free play is sure to increase the sales of an otherwise great multiplayer shooter.
Unreal Tournament III getting huge update

I feel Unreal Tournament III was a great game, but not regarded so highly as many. Perhaps Epic’s recent announcement of a huge DLC pack could spurr some forgotten interest.
Included in the Titan Pack are 11 all new maps along with 2 new game modes called Betrayal and Greed. The new Greed mode is described as a “tug of war style kill points battle”, whatever that means. And Betrayal seems to be a mode where teams are changed throughout the match leading you to kill your previous teammates, hence Betrayal.
Other than that, the Titan Pack adds a bunch of new weapons, vehicles, and new characters. Yes, really lives up to it’s name because that’s not all. It also adds support for Steam Achievements and Trophy Support for the PS3. Phew.
The Titan Pack for Unreal Tournament III will be released for the PS3 and PC on March 5th. No update for the 360, I guess.

Unreal Tournament 3 Goes Steam-Crazy

Bracing itself for the large Unreal Tournament 3 patch that is due out soon, Valve today enabled free Steam registration for the game.
The registration is a simple matter of entering the CD key in Steam’s activation menu. Any CD key should be eligible for activation, including versions of the game purchased from other digital distribution services. However, the activation will require a new installation of the game, so if you don’t want hard drive bloat, be sure to uninstall your old version first.
The update will bring over 50 Steamworks Achievements, as well as new features and enhancements in AI, mod support, server browsing and more.
Huge UT3 Patch, Bonus Pack Incoming

Are your guns and armor languishing in the closet? Epic wants you to bring them out as the studio has spilled the beans on a forthcoming major patch for the PC version of Unreal Tournament 3.
Among the major new features will be support for Steam achievements for those who installed the title through Valve’s digital distribution platform. There will be other tweaks and the developer is readying a collection of bonus maps dubbed the Titan Pack, with lead designer Steve Polge saying that it will be “substantially bigger than any bonus pack we’ve released in the past.”
Only Epic knows when the patch and the pack are going to be released.
