China bans WoW

The Chinese publisher NetEase, which has been running World of Warcraft in the country, has been ordered by the General Administration of Press and Publications (GAPP) to stop charging players and to block further signups for the game. GAPP, which recently shut down as many as 200 MMOs, cited “illegal behavior” in WoW, while China’s Ministry of Culture has said the GAPP’s ban was “inappropriate”. Seems like politics will be digging deeper into this issue.

Additional instances error fixed in North American WoW servers

September 5th, 2009 2 Comments   Posted in Multiplayer, PC, PlayStation 3, RPG, Update

additionalinstancesOver at the World of Warcraft forums, a Blizzard representative gave word that they have successfully changed how the infamous “Additional instances cannot be launched” error works.

The limit for instances per server has been notched up a bit, and the performance instances are being given are also improved.

The reason behind many players participating in Heroic instances is due to the recent 3.2 changes of Heroic dungeons providing Emblems of Conquest. This way, all fresh 80’s can get their Ulduar gear with just some grinding.

No word on when European and Australian servers will be seeing the fix.

World of Warcraft faction transfers now underway

September 2nd, 2009 1 Comment   Posted in MMO, PC, RPG

After playing the same faction for four years now, it wouldn’t hurt to have a little change. In fact, it might get a little boring to be the same race for so long. Fortunately, Blizzard has now begun their faction transfers. Players can now switch from Alliance to Horde, or Horde to Alliance.

Once changed, you can choose any race to be as long as it matches your character’s class. For example, you can’t create a Draenei Rogue, but you can become a Human Rogue. But, who would want to go Alliance anyways? Traitor.

The faction change costs $30.00 and can be done here.

GDC Austin keynote to be on World of Warcraft

July 22nd, 2009 1 Comment   Posted in Business, MMO, Multiplayer, PC, RPG

Looks like the keynote speakers for this year’s Game Developer’s Conference will be none other than Blizzard’s Frank Pearce, Co-Founder & Executive Vice President of Product Development, and J. Allen Brack, Production Director.

The keynote will focus on “The Universe of World of Warcraft.” A bit redundant, don’t you think? One can only assume that it will outline what it takes to maintain and develop for such a large MMORPG. Maybe even a few words on the upcoming expansion, or more improbably, a look at the Warcraft movie.

This year’s GDC will be held at Austin, Texas from September 15th through 18th.

Warcraft movie director announced

July 22nd, 2009 No Comments   Posted in MMO, Offbeat, Online, PC, RPG

The same guy behind the Spider-Man trilogy has been announced to be the director for the Warcraft movie. Sam Raimi is also responsible for such works as “The Evil Dead” and “Drag Me To Hell.”

Blizzard Entertainment and Legendary Pictures will be working together for the film. So, maybe it won’t be so bad if Blizzard has most of the creative control.

“Sam’s passion for ‘Warcraft’ is undeniable and we know that he will create an incredible film worthy of Blizzard’s phenomenal franchise,” said Legendary Pictures CEO Thomas Tull.

“From our first conversation with Sam, we could tell he was the perfect choice,”” added Paul Sams, chief operating officer of Blizzard Entertainment. “Sam knows how to simultaneously satisfy the enthusiasts and the mainstream audience that might be experiencing that content for the first time.”

There’s a lot of Warcraft lore out there, beginning from the debut of the scourge up to the return of the Lich King. And who can forget all of the novels that spawned along the way? Details are scarce right now, as the movie is still in production. Hopefully more information will pop up in this year’s Comic-Con.

December 17th, 2008 1 Comment   Posted in Action, Adventure, Events

Would you walk into a game themed restaurant if you didn’t know what that game is? Well how about a Warcraft restaurant? And how about a World of Warcraft restaurant?

Well there’s a guy in Beijing that has a WoW themed restaurant. Does he serve power-ups? Recipes from the game? Or is it just plain Chinese food wrapped around in a Warcraft coat? Besides the Dark Portal on the door and the artwork from the game on the walls there are large screens that show the game in real time. Talk about a passion for the game… or wait, did I say obsession?

wow Blizzard needs to get an even bigger swimming pool for all its money, as the company announced that it now has over 11 million World of Warcraft subscribers worldwide.

The company hits the milestone in anticipation of the Wrath of the Lich King expansion pack, which is due out November 13.

"It’s been very rewarding to see gamers around the world continue to show such strong support for World of Warcraft," said Blizzard CEO Mike Morhaime. "We remain fully committed to responding to that enthusiasm with a high-quality, constantly evolving game experience."

Analysts expect WoW to gain another million subscribers by next year. Blizzard is already working on a new MMO, though it has stated that the game will be “different” from WoW and that they will continue to support WoW as long as people want them to.
