New Zelda for Wii not committed for 2010
We first heard about the new Zelda game for Wii at the 2009 E3 expo, where Shigeru Miyamoto himself unveiled the news. Now Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime has refused to confirm the game for 2010 in an interview with GameTrailers TV, saying “We haven’t committed to Zelda in 2010″.
Nintendo is known for delaying their highly anticipated titles like Zelda and Mario, but in the end, it has often resulted in a better overall product. Let’s hope it’s the same with the next Zelda, even if we have to wait until 2011.
Triforce added to Google logo, gets promptly removed

It seems that sometime last week an easter egg was found on Google’s homepage which you can see above. Look familiar? It should as it’s the mark of the Triforce found in the ever popular Zelda franchise.
It seems that this is the work of Zelda superfan/Google artist Susis Sahim who was tasked with designing some logos for Google. Instead of producing said logos, Sahim decided to slip in the Triforce image which was then promptly removed sometime after.
Let’s hope that Google can find the humor in this instead of giving Sahim the boot.

New Wii Zelda Not Going New Direction
There’s been talk of the next Wii Zelda title taking the series in a new direction. Some patents hinted at a hint system and drop in-drop out style of gameplay that would make the game more casual-friendly. In the lastest issue of Nintendo Power Shigeru Miyamoto said that this next game won’t be the one to take things in a new direction: “I don’t think it’s going to be that radically different.”
I’m guessing that any Zelda game which would be a radical departure from the standard formula will be developed separately from a standard Zelda title. While Mario games have benefitted from variety and changing gameplay experiences, the Zelda series has kept fans by keeping to its roots, requiring exploration and puzzle solving to advance. Nintendo relies heavily on their first party titles featuring their flagship characters and releasing a Zelda title that could potentially alienate fans is a big risk. They’ll likely release a fan-appeasing title before venturing forth with something different.
MotionPlus Could Be Required For Next Zelda
With Wii sales beginning to drop off it’s no surprise that Nintendo revealed new games were on the way for their big three: Mario, Zelda and Metroid. The only thing we’ve seen so far was Mario Galaxy 2 and New Super Mario Bros. Wii, but it’s been a foregone conclusion that the Wii would be getting another Zelda game sometime soon.
In an interview with Wired, Shigeru Miyamoto said that in developing the next Zelda game they’re considering whether or not to go with a Wii MotionPlus control scheme. While the extra peripheral would enable even more intuitive control schemes and more realistic inputs, Miyamoto and co are worried about forcing people to use the peripheral since it has only recently launched and its popularity is still unknown. While they hope that the new Zelda game will be exciting and appealing enough to get people to buy the peripheral on its own, their concern is that things will go the other way, with some gamers not playing the title because they’d have to get the accessory.
Ultimately though I’d guess that the Zelda game will include the peripheral since the MotionPlus would allow for a more robust combat system and Zelda fans are rabid enough to pick up a peripheral, especially if there’s a bundle available.
Zelda E3 teaser image released

Shigeru Miyamoto briefly talked about the upcoming Zelda game for the Wii at E3, and showed a teaser image, which at the time was “secret”. Nintendo has now released the image, which is basically an artwork from the game (which you can indulge yourself in above).
Miyamoto confirms new Zelda Wii game in 2010

In a recent roundtable discussion at E3 with Nintendo legend Shegeru Miyamoto, the master revealed — and confirmed — that a new Zelda Wii game is in development and will be released in 2010. Miyamoto also added that the game would definitely use the new Wii Motion Plus accessory, and possibly require it, should it become popular. He also mentioned that he wanted to showcase the game at E3 this year, however, the development team felt that their resources would be spent better making the actual game than a demo for E3.
PAL Virtual Console gets Majora’s Mask

Nintendo recently announced that the N64 title, The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask, has hit the PAL Virtual Console today.
Priced at 1000 Wii Points, Majora’s Mask makes for an almost complete library of console Zelda games provided by the Virtual Console, quite impressive.
The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask was originally released in 2000 for the N64 and was met with praise from the gaming community, so now’s your chance to experience it if you never got the chance to.

Sony hasn’t been in the games industry for quite as long and Microsoft is a relative newcomer to the console game.

New Zelda announcement at GDC 2009?

It’s been quite a while since we’ve heard anything about Link and his adventures in Hyrule, but buzz circulating the internet suggests that may change soon enough.
Satoru Iwata, President of Nintendo, will give the companies keynote address at GDC in 2009 and chances are we will be hearing something of a new Zelda. This rumor surfaces from various observations:
It has already been made known that there is a new Zelda in the works and Nintendo’s release schedule for late 2009 isn’t exactly chalk full of games (see: bare).
These observations coupled with the fact that hit releases like LittleBigPlanet and Gears of War 2 have made their debut at the conference point to Nintendo announcing a new Zelda. I guess we will have to wait and see when GDC 2009 rolls around this March.
