Valve submits toned down version of Left 4 Dead 2 for Australian rating

If you’ve been following Left 4 Dead 2 you may know that the game was denied classification in Australia due to “living humans with a rabies-like virus” and “realistic, frenetic and unrelenting violence” which smells like a typical zombie shooter to me, right?
Well, Valve has submitted the paperwork to appeal this decision but just in case the appeal doesn’t work they have also submitted a second, toned down version of Left 4 Dead 2 that reportedly meets all of the requirements to get a MA15+ rating.
Valve hasn’t said what they have edited as they do not even want to release this toned down version but chances are, it’ll just be a hallow shell of a great game that could have been.

Nation Red demo now live

A demo for Nation Red has now hit the web. DiezelPower Studios’ infinite zombie shooter puts you in an arena where you are pitted against several game modes with many weapons at your arsenal.
Nation Red is scheduled for release next week on content distribution services such as Direct2Drive. You can alternatively download the game directly from the official website right away.
I haven’t really heard much about this game until now, but from the looks of it, it doesn’t look bad at all.
You can download the 324 MB demo over at GamersHell.
Resident Evil 4 hits App Store for iPhone/iPod touch

Early this month we let you know that Capcom was gearing up to launch an iPhone/iPod touch port of their popular Resident Evil 4 title. Well, the day has come as the game has officially been spotted on the App Store for $7.99.
Despite its somewhat high price (for an app, anyways) this game is sure to be a hit because well, it is Resident Evil 4 after all, right?

Left 4 Dead gets patched

Valve has recently announced a patch has been released for their much loved zombie shooter Left 4 Dead. Don’t expect much from the patch as it’s mostly bug fixed but regardless it’s not available to download via Steam.
Below are the Left 4 Dead patch notes:
Removed the “Are you ready to play Versus?” confirmation Fixed a crash when using mouse wheel or keyboard to select Campaign chapters Fixed sv_steamgroup_exclusive servers advertising for public lobbies Restored the ability to vote for a new campaign in Versus mode
Dead Rising 2 to appear next at Tokyo Game Show

Dead Rising 2 was absent from E3 due to concerns over the infamous Swine Flu. So, the next logical place it would show up would be PAX, right? Nope, it seems that Dead Rising 2 will in fact be absent from PAX just as it was E3 with its next public showing slated for the Tokyo Game Show set to take place in September.
Joystiq proceeded to contact a Capcom representative for comment but all they got in return was to look out for the game during the Tokyo Game Show. Bummer.
Dead Rising 2 will be out for the Xbox 360, Playstation 3 and PC on March 21st, 2010.
Newest COD Map Pack Sells One Million In First Week
I continue to be amazed at the sheer number of World War II based shooters that can be put onto the market and still perform well. There have been countless digital reenactments of almost every important battle in the entire conflict yet it seems that gamers aren’t sick of them yet. Despite being jaded about the genre, I admit to being somewhat interested in Call of Duty: World of War.
Everyone else is too it seems because Treyarch announced that in the first weekend the second map pack was downloaded over a million times. The $9.99 content pack contains four maps, including Shi No Numa. Yes, that’s right, it’s another zombie level. That’s got a lot to do with the appeal of this game for many I’m guessing. If you’re unfamiliar with the mode, it’s an online co-op mode similar to the Gears of War horde mode where players face wave after wave of enemies, only this time they’re a combination of two popular video game enemies: Nazis and zombies.
Left 4 Dead 2 boycott group repsonds to Valves response

First Left 4 Dead 2 was announced, then a group of 15,000+ formed to boycott said game, then Valve responded to the boycott and now the group has responded to Valve.
“While we are excited about the idea of new content, we are still in the dark about it. What sort of content is it? For all we know, it could be a new main menu screen. Is it a new map, is it new monsters, is it new weapons, etc…? We’d like to know what is going to be in this new content.
Furthermore, when will this content be released? Is there any sort of timetable within which the content will be made available? These are all questions we would like Valve to elaborate on.
Last, Valve is trying to address the community split from releasing a new game in the series… they did not go into details, and are still working on it.”
I mean I don’t really blame them for giving such a stern response. Valve says that there will be new content for the original Left 4 Dead but exactly what kind of content and when, if ever, will this content hit? Let’s hope that Valve didn’t just tell the boycott group what they wanted to hear to calm them down as we will have a very unhappy community if that is the case.
The House of the Dead Overkill Game Review–One Huge Seventies Reference
I was starting to think that the Wii was nothing but a dumping ground for massive party game packs of mini games, and then something happened to change my entire perspective. It’s called The House of the Dead: Overkill, and it’s a whole lot more fun than I ever expected.
See, The House of the Dead: Overkill plays like a massive collection of seventies drive-in movies unified by one basic script. You play as Agent G, aided and abetted by Detective Washington and a stripper with the unlikely name of Varla Guns, all after a madman with chemically driven plans for global conquest via an army of mutant humans and animals. Most of the mutated humans in question look almost EXACTLY like zombies. You’ll be chasing said madman, Papa Caesar by name, through a series of nightmarish challenges, including clearing out a plantation house of zombies, blasting your way through a prison, hospital, and carnival of the dead, and taking on horrific bloated monstrosities in a swamp.
Seriously, there’s probably enough basic fodder here to make a dozen or more direct to video splatter flicks, and they probably wouldn’t be half bad, either. Carny alone would give me the galloping creepsies, and there have already been some pretty solid zombie prison movies. Even The Asylum could do one right back in the day when they weren’t churning out sad retreads of blockbusters one right after the next.
The graphics are appropriately splattery, and the voice acting just screams seventies drive-in, in fact, the level of profanity in this game was probably approaching unnecessarily high levels but that’s nothing adults can’t handle. But where this game really got me was in terms of sheer gameplay. The Wiimote is surprisingly well placed to handle shooter games—all I could think while playing was that the Wii desperately needed a Star Trek-themed shooter. I believe that the Wiimote would make an excellent hand phaser.
Of course, there’s a down side to all this, too—if you’re not into splatter flicks and blasting zombies then you’re not going to get anything out of this game. I happen to fall into both those categories, both loving watching other people blast zombies and doing the blasting of said zombies myself. This game is tailor-made for people like me, but if you don’t happen to fall into the category of a horror enthusiast then it’s not going to be the game for you. All you’ll do in this game is shoot zombies with a variety of weapons.
Speaking of which, I loved the variety of weapons in this game. I further loved that they were upgradeable based on level performance, which provided the infusion of cash necessary to have my hardware tricked out and to get my shotgun and assault rifle and whatnot up to their highest levels. I do somewhat resent that combo scoring seemed to be affected by my use of an automatic weapon, but this was a minor irritant at best and certainly didn’t get in the way of the game’s sheer blistering fun factor.
The House of the Dead: Overkill should provide plenty of fun and plenty of action. Better, it’ll do that in a shooter package that doesn’t depend on you hovering above a gun barrel for once. Excellent, smooth gameplay and fun dialogue make this one one to pick up if you’ve got even the slightest horror buff tendency.
Capcom releases Resident Evil 5 sales numbers, close to 5 million

Resident Evil 5 was released a little over 2 months ago and recieved generally positive feedback from the critics but we were left in the dark in terms of sales numbers until now — During the Reuters Global Technology Summit held in Tokyo last week Capcom CFO Kazuhiko Abe made a statement that the game has sold around 4.9 million copies since its March 13th release date.
About 4.4 million, Abe says, were sold during the game’s release month with the additional ~500,00 being sold in April. Despite being a rather huge drop in sales Capcom apparently expected it saying they only plan to sell another ~500,000 copies through March 31st, 2010.
Kotaku notes the fact that games with a “hardcore, existing audience” such as Resident Evil 5 sell well in their first few months but once all said hardcore fans actually purchase it sales drop dramatic amounts. Now I’m just hoping to see Resident Evil 5 for like $20 at Gamestop, then I’ll be happy.
Sony announces PSN title Zombie Apocalypse

If you just can’t get enough zombie mayhem you’re going to want to check this one out — Konami and Nihilstic have recently announced on the Official Playstation Blog that a new game entitled Zombie Apocalypse is set to hit the Playstation Network sometime next month.
As you can see from the above screenshot Zombie Apocalypse is exactly what it sounds like, a run around and kill as many zombies as you can game. It may seem cliche but this is exactly what the developers were getting at; they wanted a fun to play party game full of gore and fun.
Multiplayer of course will be included in the form of 4 player co op with 55 increasingly difficult levels to survive. Konami and Nihilistic really focused on creating a game that will appeal to arcade, casual, and hardcore gamers a like and it looks to me like they succeeded with Zombie Apocalypse.
Valve drops Left4Dead price 40%

Valve is offering a 24 hour free trial of Left4Dead this weekend, which we heard about yesterday, but it’s only for 24 hours. After those 24 hours, you’re probably going to want to buy the game, right?
To capitalize on this, Valve has announced that they will drop the price of Left4Dead by 40% making for a $23.99 final sale.
This is a great chance to not only try but own an excellent zombie game that was generally well received across the board.
Dead Rising 2 to have 6,500 more zombies than the first

Sure, we learned that Dead Rising 2 would be getting a multiplayer component but what we really care about are the zombies and more importantly, how we take care of those zombies.
During a recent presentation featuring Dead Rising 2, Capcom exec Keiji Inafune explaied to us how the first game’s engine was only capable of rendering 500 zombies on the screen at once. This may seem like a lot but for the second game, Capcom set their sights much higher:
“With Dead Rising 1 we got 500 zombies, but with DR2 we have 7,000, so we could have done much better the first time”, Mr. Inafune was quoted to say
7,000 zombies on the screen at once, a bit overwhelming, don’t you think? Not to Inafune; while he knows that ridiculous amounts of zombies won’t necessarily make the game better, it opens up a whole new ball park in terms of destruction:
For example, in Tokyo subway it gets very crowded with many people. Imagine getting onto a bike in Tokyo subway with two chainsaws attached to it and cutting through all those people, it’s just something that feels really damn good!
Let’s just hope he was using this as an example for what is to come in Dead Rising 2 and not a look into his sick and twisted fantasies.

Left 4 Dead PC patched, makes you tired while meleeing

Valve recently posted an article detailing the latest updates that were released today for Left 4 Dead.
There isn’t much included in the update other than some bug fixes and tweaks that will make the game run smoother. However, the update now makes it so when you melee in versus mode, you will get fatigued. This is a whole new element of gameplay that is sure to turn the tables at least a bit.
This patch release is for the PC but a console version is said to be coming with the Survival DLC pack.

Capcom reveals RE5 Multiplayer pricing for Japan

If the fact that you even have to pay for Resident Evil 5’s recently announced Versus mode didn’t enrage you enough, you better look away.
Capcom recently announced that Japanese players will be getting the DLC for 160 Microsoft Points or ¥250 over PSN (about $2.50). This compares to the North American pricing of 400 Microsoft Points and $5.
Sure, Capcom, you explained why the content needs to cost money, now explain why the Japanese get it cheaper!
